Self

Turner Contemporary Rendezvous, Margate, Kent CT9 1HG
Gallery opens Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm, admission free.

Amidst the current craze and haze of selfies, Turner Contemporary has delved into the world of the Self Portrait with a new exhibition simply titled Self. Exhibiting over 100 works, from Sir Anthony Van Dyke's last ever Self Portrait dated 1640-01 to contemporary portraits by Sarah Lucas and Tracey Emin, with Lucien Freud and Andy Warhol in between to name but a few, Turner Contemporary are asking us to 'be challenged, surprised, and think differently.'

'In this extraordinary new exhibition, Turner Contemporary becomes a frame through which self-portraiture is re-evaluated in the 21st century, sparking conversations on history, celebrity, collecting, gender, mortality and contemporary approaches.

Artists have been recreating their own image for centuries. From self-advertisement and preserving legacy, to figurative studies, political commentary and biographical exploration self-representation, has shaped Western art.'

On Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays at 11.30am you can attend a free art tour, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm there are Spotlight Stories where Turner Contemporary staff personally select an artwork to share with you which has inspired them, so there are plenty of ways to explore this pertinent exhibition.

It's worthwhile keeping an eye on the Turner Contemporary website, as the gallery runs a programme of events and learning opportunities in conjunction with their exhibitions.

Each portrait celebrates a different aspect of Cliftonville, and draws upon the subjects' memories of living and working in the area.

Picasso & Matisse
30 January - 1 March 2015
Private view: 30 January 6-8pm.

UpDown Gallery Satis House, 11 Elms Avenue, Ramsgate CT11 9BW
Gallery opens Thursday - Sunday 11am - 5pm

UpDown Gallery in Ramsgate is holding an exhibition of prints by Picasso and Matisse.

The exhibition is but a small selection from their vast oeuvre. Printmaking formed an integral part in each artist’s development of ideas and style, imagery that is now recognised around the world. Each artist produced 1000’s of prints during their lifetimes, and with paintings now soaring into the increasingly inaccessible 10’s of millions this has created a competitive market for their prints.

On the artists' relationship, UpDown's press release says It could be called a rivalry, a dialogue, a chess game—Matisse himself once compared it to a boxing match. But it also became the abiding friendship of two titans who, daring to paint the ugly, transformed our sense of beauty in art.

The gallery's owner and curator Kate Smith offers an arts consultancy service and a collectors club, so this could be a great opportunity to add an already collectible artwork to your walls.

You can contact the gallery directly with enquiries here.

Anthony Giles: Escape to the Sea
17 January - 15 February 2015

Margate Gallery, 2 Lombard Street, Margate CT9 1EJGallery opens Tuesday- Saturday 11am – 5pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 12-4pm

Margate Gallery is currently holding an exhibition of Anthony Giles’ paintings, most of which are started en plein air and then ‘worked-up’ over several months in the studio. As a landscape painter he spends much of his time looking at every colour, shadow and reflection of the world around him to then transfer those moments onto canvas.

Somehow a rain soaked canvas, that has sand and grass blown into it, holds onto some of the magic of the moment, and that is exactly what Anthony wants from his work. The essence of that moment in Nature when he’s totally absorbed in capturing the image that surrounds him.

The gallery will be hosting a Meet the Artist event on Saturday 24th January from 12-4pm. You can read more information on Anthony Giles and preview some of his works from the exhibition here.

If you know of any other exhibitions opening up in the CT9 area in January which you think I ought to know about, please contact me at here.

Thank you for reading.
